How the score adds up

Eight kootas, 36 gunas

  1. 1up to 1

    Varna

Outlook and work: how each approaches duty and ambition.

  2. 2up to 2

    Vashya

Attraction, and who draws whom in the relationship.

  3. 3up to 3

    Tara

The birth stars counted from each other: wellbeing and fortune.

  4. 4up to 4

    Yoni

Physical closeness, read through the animal of each birth star.

  5. 5up to 5

    Graha Maitri

Friendship of minds: whether the lords of the two Moon signs get on.

  6. 6up to 6

    Gana

Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nature.

  7. 7up to 7

    Bhakoot

Family life, love and prosperity: how the two Moon signs sit.

  8. 8up to 8

    Nadi

Health and children. Carries the most weight; the same nadi is Nadi dosha.

What the score means

A guide, not a verdict

  • Under 18

    Below the traditional threshold

Tradition suggests a pandit read both charts in full before deciding.

  • 18 to 24

    Acceptable

Above the line most families use. Many go ahead, sometimes after a word with their pandit.

  • 25 to 32

    Good

    Comfortably above the threshold.

  • 33 to 36

    Excellent

A very high score by the traditional count.

The total is one part of the picture. Families also weigh Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, the Manglik check for both, and, in the South, Rajju and Vedha among the poruthams. The match shows each of these, with the traditional exceptions that apply.

North and South

Ashtakoot and porutham, side by side

North Indian families mostly use the eight-part Ashtakoot match out of 36. Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayali families often use the ten poruthams (dasa porutham), where Rajju and Vedha matter most. Both start from the same thing, the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Choose North or South Indian at the top of the form: it decides which method leads the result, the PDF and the chart drawings (diamond or square). The other method is always one tap away, so both families can read the match their way.

How we calculate

The same maths your pandit uses

Planet positions are calculated for the exact time and place of birth, with the place's time zone at that date (including India's wartime clock of 1942 to 1945), then made sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa. We check our positions against the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference most astrology software is built on. Want one person's chart in full? Make a free kundli.

Questions

Kundli matching, answered

What is kundli matching?
Kundli matching (kundli milan or guna milan) compares the birth charts of the bride and groom before a wedding. The common North Indian method, Ashtakoot, scores eight areas from the Moon's sign and nakshatra in each chart, for a total out of 36. South Indian families often use the ten poruthams instead, or as well. Our tool shows both.
How many gunas should match?
Tradition treats 18 of 36 as the minimum. 18 to 24 is usually called acceptable, 25 to 32 good and 33 or more excellent. Doshas count too: many families look closely at Nadi dosha and Manglik even when the total is high, and many go ahead with a lower total after their pandit has read both charts.
We do not know the exact birth time. Can we still match?
Yes. The 36-point match only needs the Moon's sign and nakshatra, and the Moon usually stays in one nakshatra for about a day, so a date and place are often enough. Tick that the time is not known and we tell you whether the Moon changed nakshatra on that day. The Manglik check is then counted from the Moon only, because the Lagna needs the time.
What is Manglik dosha, and is it a problem?
A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna or the Moon. Tradition holds that a Manglik should marry a Manglik, and that several exceptions soften it, such as Mars in its own sign or Jupiter looking at Mars. Our report shows which apply. Many families simply ask their pandit, who may suggest a puja.
What is Nadi dosha?
Each nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis: Aadi, Madhya or Antya. When both share a nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 of 8, which tradition treats seriously. It is traditionally cancelled when both have the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, the same nakshatra but different Moon signs, or the same nakshatra in a different pada. We list the exceptions that apply to you.
Why does another website show a slightly different score?
Small differences are normal. Sites use slightly different tables for Vashya and Gana, some use a different ayanamsa, and a few minutes of birth time or the wrong place can move the Moon into the next nakshatra. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard of the Indian government's panchang, and say which rule each part follows.
Do you keep our birth details?
No. Everything is worked out on your own phone or computer, and the details stay in the page address after the # sign, which browsers do not send to any website. Nothing is stored unless you press Save on this device, which keeps it in that browser only. A link you share carries the birth details, so share it only with people you trust. More in our privacy notes.
Is this the same as what our pandit does?
The calculation is the same one most pandits and astrology software use. A pandit also reads each chart as a whole, weighs your family's customs and fixes the muhurat for the wedding itself. Many families use a report like this to start that conversation, which is why you can download it as a PDF.

Shaadiwaale presents traditional readings as guidance, not predictions. Please check the birth details, the rules your family follows and any wedding date with your family pandit or astrologer before you decide. Birth places from GeoNames (geonames.org, CC BY 4.0).
