A WhatsApp icon, a padlock and a chat bubble on layered green shapes
A short reply, sent early, is the kindest thing a guest can do.

The invitation arrived as a link in the family chat, or as a card your colleague sent you directly. You opened it, admired the design, and meant to reply. Three weeks later the couple is still waiting, because somewhere between the forward and the next notification, the answer never got sent. It is easy to let slip, and it leaves the couple guessing.

A reply to a wedding invitation is short, but it carries real information: whether you are coming, to which functions, and with how many people. The couple and their families use it to give the caterer a head count1 and to arrange rooms for guests travelling from another city.2 This guide gives you the replies to send, for every situation and every kind of host, in English and Hindi. Sending invitations yourself? Our WhatsApp invitation messages are the other half of the conversation.

Quick answer: Reply to a wedding invitation within a few days, even if the wedding is months away. Thank the couple or their family, congratulate them, and answer exactly what the invitation asks: which functions you will attend and how many people are coming. If the invitation has its own reply form, use it, because that is how the couple has asked you to reply. If you cannot come, say so warmly and early, and send your blessings. If you are not sure, say when you will know.

1. What a good reply says

A good reply does four things. It thanks the person for the invitation. It congratulates the couple. It answers the question clearly: yes, no, or not yet, and for which functions. And if you are coming, it says how many of you there will be.

That is the whole reply. It does not need to be long, and it should not be a single thumbs-up, which tells the couple that you saw it and nothing else.

Send it soon. Emily Post advises replying to any invitation within a day or two3 and calls a prompt reply a wedding guest's first duty.4

What it means for you: answer the question the couple is actually asking, which is usually "how many of you, and for which functions?"

2. Saying yes: replies for family, friends and colleagues

For family:

  • Thank you so much for the invitation! Congratulations to Kavya and Rohan. All four of us will be there for the haldi, the wedding and the reception. Cannot wait.
  • Mausi, what wonderful news! We will be there on the 12th and 13th. Papa and I are coming, and Riya will join us for the wedding.

For friends:

  • YES. Obviously. I have already applied for leave. Count me in for everything, especially the sangeet.
  • Congratulations, you two, and thank you for inviting Sameer too! We will both be there for the sangeet and the wedding, so that is two of us.

For colleagues:

  • Thank you for inviting me, and many congratulations! I would be glad to come to the reception on the 14th.
  • Congratulations to you both, and thank you for including my wife. We will both be at the reception.

What it means for you: say the number, even when it feels obvious. "We will be there" could mean two people or six.

3. Saying no, politely

Declining is easier when you do it early and warmly. You do not need to give a detailed reason; Emily Post's advice is to keep any explanation brief.5 A short one helps, and blessings soften it. An early no also gives the couple time to invite someone in your place if they wish.4

  • Thank you so much for the invitation, and congratulations! I am so sorry I will not be able to make it, as I will be travelling that week. Sending you both all my love and blessings.
  • What lovely news, congratulations! Unfortunately we cannot be there on the 13th, but we are celebrating with you from here. Have the most beautiful wedding.
  • Thank you for thinking of me. I will not be able to come to the wedding, but I would love to meet you both when you are back in Delhi. Many congratulations.

If you cannot come to the wedding but can come to the reception, say so: "I cannot make it to Jaipur, but I will be at the reception in Delhi."

What it means for you: a "no" sent early is far kinder than a "yes" withdrawn late. The couple can plan around an honest answer.

4. When you are not sure yet

Sometimes you genuinely do not know: leave is not confirmed, an exam date is not out, a relative's health is uncertain. Say so, and say when you will know. For a maybe on an online invitation, Emily Post's advice is to make sure you follow up with your final answer.6

  • Congratulations! We would love to come. I am waiting to hear about my leave and will confirm by the end of this month.
  • Thank you for the invitation! I will most likely make it to the reception, but let me confirm by next week once my travel is fixed.

What it means for you: then actually confirm. Put a reminder in your phone the moment you send the "maybe".

5. Replying to elders, and in Hindi

When the invitation comes from an elder, or from the couple's parents, reply with respect: use their title, thank them for the invitation, and offer your blessings to the couple. A phone call after the message is a kind touch.

  • Respected Uncle, thank you for the invitation. Heartiest congratulations to you and the family. All three of us will surely be there to bless Kavya and Rohan.

What it means for you: for elders, reply in the language the invitation came in.

6. Replying on an online invitation

A wedding invitation may arrive as a link that opens a small website rather than a picture. If the invitation has its own reply form, reply there instead of in the chat: tick the functions you will attend, give the number of people, and add a note. Emily Post's advice is to reply in the manner the invitation indicates,3 and here that is the form.

On a Shaadiwaale invitation, for example, the reply asks which celebrations you will attend, how many of you are coming and, if the couple asks, what you eat. Your answer goes straight into the couple's guest list, so nobody has to copy it from a chat later, and you can change it later on the same link. It takes a few taps, and you can still send the couple a personal message as well.

What it means for you: if there is a reply form, use it, then send your congratulations in the chat too.

7. Wishes and blessings to add to your reply

A line of good wishes turns a plain reply into a warm one:

  • Wishing you a lifetime of love and laughter.
  • May your marriage be as beautiful as your wedding.
  • So happy for you both. You are perfect together.
  • Sending all our love and blessings to the new couple.
  • ढेर सारी शुभकामनाएँ। आप दोनों हमेशा ख़ुश रहें।

What it means for you: one line is enough. Save the long message for the wedding card you bring on the day.

8. What RSVP means on an Indian wedding card

RSVP stands for the French "répondez s'il vous plaît", which means "please respond".7 On an Indian wedding card the RSVP line gives the names and phone numbers of people to contact, such as relatives of the couple;8 one Indian card guide suggests two, so guests can always get through.2 It is not decoration: it tells you that the hosts want to know whether you will come,3 and whom to tell. A call or a WhatsApp message to one of them is the reply.9 Our wedding invitation wording guide shows where it sits on the card.

What it means for you: if a card says RSVP, the family is expecting an answer from you, yes or no.

9. What not to do

  • Do not reply in a big group with your personal plans. Reply to the person who invited you; in a group, WhatsApp's Reply privately option sends your answer to the sender alone.10
  • Do not bring people who were not invited.3 Whoever is named on the invitation is invited; if you are unsure whether a partner or children are included, ask rather than assume.
  • Do not leave the invitation unanswered until the week of the wedding.
  • Do not change your answer at the last minute unless you must, and if you must, tell the couple at once.4

Frequently asked questions

How do I reply to a wedding invitation on WhatsApp?

Thank them for the invitation, congratulate the couple, and say clearly whether you will come, to which functions, and how many of you. How do I politely decline a wedding invitation?

Reply early, thank them, congratulate the couple, say kindly that you cannot make it, and send your blessings. A short reason is enough.

How do I reply to a wedding invitation from an elder?

Use their title, thank them for the invitation, offer your congratulations and blessings to the couple, and say whether your family will come and how many of you. Reply in the language the invitation came in, and call if you can.

How soon should I reply to a wedding invitation?

Within a few days of receiving it, even if the wedding is months away. If you do not know yet, say when you will, and then follow up with your final answer.
