10 Bollywood Co-Stars Who Showed Up at Each Other's Weddings

The chemistry is the easy part. Two actors are paired, the film does well, the interviews are affectionate, and for a season or two the country decides they belong together. What happens afterwards is the real test, and it is a quieter one: when one of them gets married, does the other turn up? Not for the cameras at the gate, which are compulsory, but inside, where the dancing is. Bollywood co-stars at each other's weddings is a small genre of its own, and the best entries in it tell you more about the people than any promotional tour ever did.

This is a list of ten such appearances. Shah Rukh Khan flying to Mahabalipuram fifteen months before Jawan reached cinemas. 1. Shah Rukh Khan at Nayanthara's wedding

The film: Jawan (2023). The wedding: Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan, Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa, Mahabalipuram, 9 June 2022.

In June 2022 Jawan was a title teaser six days old and a release date a long way off.¹ Shah Rukh Khan had not had a film in cinemas since Zero in 2018,² had just recovered from Covid, and was not, by any measure, obliged to fly to the Tamil coast for the wedding of a co-star in a film nobody had yet seen. He went. Business Today reported him recovered from the illness and at the ceremony in Mahabalipuram;³ his manager Pooja Dadlani posted his outfit for the day with the caption "For Nayanthara's Special Day";⁴ and Atlee, who was directing them both, posted a photograph with him from the wedding.⁴ Rajinikanth was there too, with Mani Ratnam, Vijay Sethupathi and a long list of Tamil cinema's first rank³.¹

It is the kind of appearance that reads differently in hindsight. Fifteen months later, on 7 September 2023, Jawan opened to the biggest first day Hindi cinema had seen,⁵ and the photographs from that June morning, a Hindi star at a Tamil wedding by the sea, look in hindsight like the film's first poster. At the time it was simply a co-star showing up, a long way from home, for a leading lady whose film with him was still more than a year from cinemas.

What you can take from it: the beach wedding as a serious option. The couple had first planned to marry at Tirupati and moved, Vignesh Shivan said, because the temple could not hold their 150 guests; the resort they chose has its own private beach on the Bay of Bengal.⁶ Mahabalipuram proved that a venue by the sea can hold a formal, traditional ceremony and a guest list that starry. 2. Deepika and Ranveer at Priyanka's reception

The film: Bajirao Mastani (2015). The wedding: Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, second Mumbai reception, Taj Lands End, 20 December 2018.

Bajirao Mastani gave Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone one of the great two-heroine numbers of the decade, Pinga, danced by Bajirao's two wives, Kashibai and Mastani,⁷ and three years later they did it again, in a hotel ballroom, for an audience of wedding guests. At Priyanka and Nick's second Mumbai reception, at the Taj Lands End on 20 December, the one IANS called their Bollywood reception,⁸ "Priyanka, Deepika and Ranveer even recreated their Bajirao Mastani hit 'Pinga'," as The Quint put it,⁹ with Ranveer Singh, according to NewsBytes, imitating his character's steps from the film.¹⁰ Deepika and Ranveer had themselves been married five weeks earlier and were still, technically, on their own wedding circuit. They came anyway, twinning in black. Nick Jonas, newly initiated, danced to Gallan Goodiyaan and Desi Girl.¹⁰ Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif were among the other guests reported.⁸

The Pinga clip did what wedding videos do now: it left the room by way of Instagram and was in the papers the next day.⁹ Two women who had played the two wives of the same man on screen were, in the only version that mattered, dancing the same steps at one of their weddings.

3. Kareena, Salman and Ranbir at Sonam's wedding

The films: Veere Di Wedding (2018), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Saawariya (2007). The wedding: Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja, Bandra, Mumbai, 8 May 2018, reception at The Leela.

Sonam Kapoor's wedding was the rare Bollywood event where three eras of her co-stars were in one room, and each did what you would expect. Kareena Kapoor Khan, her co-star in Veere Di Wedding,¹¹ arrived at the Sikh ceremony on the morning of 8 May with Saif and Taimur,¹² in pastel pink, three weeks before the film released, and Rhea Kapoor, its producer, later posted a photograph of the two women with a caption that included "Real and reel bride".¹³ At the reception that night, BollywoodShaadis reported, Kareena asked the DJ for Ole Ole, Saif's song,¹⁴ which tells you who was running the floor.

Then Salman Khan took the microphone. The Deccan Chronicle's account has him singing with Mika Singh and crooning the title track of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi while Shah Rukh Khan dragged Anand onto the floor to dance with Sonam.¹⁵ Salman and Sonam had been paired in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo three years earlier,¹⁶ and Karan Johar, Gulf News reported, danced to its title song.¹⁷ And in the crowd was Ranbir Kapoor,¹⁸ who had made his debut alongside Sonam's own in Saawariya eleven years before.¹⁹

What you can take from it: the house wedding. Sonam married at her aunt's bungalow in Bandra, with the ceremony in the morning and the reception at The Leela that night.²⁰ It is the format most Indian families already use, scaled up. 4. Shahid Kapoor at Kiara's wedding

The film: Kabir Singh (2019). The wedding: Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra, Suryagarh Palace, Jaisalmer, 7 February 2023.

The Jaisalmer wedding was small by Bollywood standards, an "intimate ceremony" for families and close friends in PTI's account,²¹ which is why the guest list told you something. Karan Johar, Juhi Chawla, Manish Malhotra, whose pink lehenga the bride wore,²² and Isha Ambani at the welcome party.²³ And Shahid Kapoor with Mira Rajput, who shared their own photographs from the desert under a caption that put them firmly on the bride's side: "Ladkiwale. Warm, intimate and so special! Congratulations".²⁴ Shahid had played opposite Kiara in Kabir Singh four years earlier, one of the biggest Hindi hits of 2019,²⁵ and he came to Suryagarh as one of the ladkiwale rather than the groom's party.

There is a particular grace in a co-star turning up for the bride at a wedding where the groom is also a famous actor. Shahid and Mira wore blue and beige,²² and the couple's own video, the bride's entry to Ranjha from their film Shershaah, the varmala, the kiss, became the record of the day.²⁶

5. Salman and Huma at Sonakshi's reception

The films: Dabangg (2010), Double XL (2022). The wedding: Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal, Mumbai, 23 June 2024, reception at Bastian.

Salman Khan launched Sonakshi Sinha. Dabangg was her first film, opposite him, and the biggest Hindi hit of 2010,²⁷ and fourteen years later she married Zaheer Iqbal in a civil ceremony at her Bandra apartment and threw the reception at Bastian, the restaurant on Linking Road, the same evening.²⁸ Salman was there. The clip that travelled, from the reception video Sonakshi shared, was Sonakshi hugging her Dabangg co-star, and then turning to an emotional Rekha and telling her not to cry.²⁹ Huma Qureshi, who had shared the screen with Sonakshi in Double XL two years earlier,³⁰ was there too, along with Kajol, Anil Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari, Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa.²⁹

It was a smaller, warmer, more Mumbai wedding than the destination ones on this list: a civil marriage at home, a party in a restaurant at night, and the man who gave her a career turning up for the party.

6. Shah Rukh Khan at Anushka's reception

The films: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), Zero (2018). The wedding: Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli, Mumbai reception, 26 December 2017, St. Regis.

Anushka Sharma's first film was opposite Shah Rukh Khan.³¹ So, four years later, was Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and so, that August, was Jab Harry Met Sejal.³² And when she and Virat Kohli, married in Tuscany on 11 December,³³ held their Mumbai reception in the Astor Ballroom of the St. Regis in Lower Parel³⁴,³⁵ Shah Rukh did what the groom's cricketing friends could not: he took over the floor. International Business Times has him dancing with the couple to a Punjabi track and then with Virat to a song from Dil Se,³⁶ Chaiyya Chaiyya by BollywoodShaadis's account.³⁴ He recited his own version of Jab Tak Hai Jaan with "Khan" in place of "Jaan",³⁵ and, NewsBytes reported, made the Indian captain recite his dialogue from the film.³⁷ Virat obliged. The room, which included MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, the Bachchans, Madhuri Dixit, A.R. Rahman³⁸ and Ranbir Kapoor,³⁵ watched the captain of India take acting notes.

Zero, their fourth film together, was still a year away.³⁹ On that night in December the relationship was simpler: the actor she had made her debut opposite, dancing at her wedding, and teaching her husband his lines.

What you can take from it: every reception needs one guest who will start the dancing, and it is worth knowing who that is before the night. 7. Vicky Kaushal and Manoj Bajpayee at Richa's reception

The films: Masaan (2015), Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). The wedding: Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, Mumbai reception, 4 October 2022.

Masaan was Vicky Kaushal's first Hindi film, and Richa Chadha was its other lead.⁴⁰ Seven years later, when Richa and Ali Fazal, who had been, in their spokesperson's words, "legally married for 2.5 years" and were finally celebrating, hosted their Mumbai reception, Vicky came.⁴¹ So did Manoj Bajpayee, who had played her husband, Sardar Khan, in Gangs of Wasseypur, and Huma Qureshi, who had been in the same film;⁴² Gulf News names both among the guests.⁴¹ So, per Gulf News, did Hrithik Roshan, Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhasker, Sanya Malhotra, Kalki Koechlin, Dia Mirza and Kiran Rao.⁴¹

It had the look of an independent-cinema wedding: a guest list heavy with the films that get festival slots as well as opening weekends, a couple who had done the paperwork years earlier and the celebration later, and a Masaan reunion and a Wasseypur one in the middle of it.

What you can take from it: the delayed celebration. 8. The Fukrey gang at Pulkit's wedding

The films: Fukrey (2013), Fukrey Returns (2017), Fukrey 3 (2023). The wedding: Pulkit Samrat and Kriti Kharbanda, ITC Grand Bharat, Manesar, 13 to 15 March 2024.

Some co-stars are a pair. Some are a gang. When Pulkit Samrat married Kriti Kharbanda, his co-star in Veerey Ki Wedding, Pagalpanti and Taish, on 15 March at the ITC Grand Bharat in Manesar, outside Delhi, ANI reported Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh, Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal among those at the functions:⁴³ the Fukrey gang, the last two now a married couple themselves.⁴⁴ Bollywood Hungama's report has Varun posting the group photograph with the bride and groom, and Manjot reposting it with a caption that begins "Jab do doston ki shaadi hoti hai, tab hum ladka aur ladki, dono ke taraf se hote hain", which is to say that when two friends marry, the gang is on both sides. Varun's sangeet photographs had the boys dancing together and Richa joining them on stage, and his caption said that when two dear friends marry, dancing in the baraat is a different joy altogether.⁴⁵

It is the only entry on this list where the co-stars were there as a unit, the way a college batch turns up, and it is also the only one where two of the guests were a married couple from the same franchise. Three Fukrey films, eleven years, one wedding where everyone finally got to be in the same frame without a script.

9. Akshay Kumar at Riteish's wedding

The films: Heyy Babyy (2007), Housefull (2010), Housefull 2 (2012). The wedding: Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza, Mumbai, sangeet at Taj Lands End, Marathi wedding at the Grand Hyatt on 3 February 2012, church wedding in Bandra on 4 February.

Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza are themselves the cleanest example of co-stars marrying, having made their debuts together in Tujhe Meri Kasam in 2003.⁴⁶ But the guest list at their wedding, which ran across a sangeet at the Taj Lands End, a Marathi ceremony at the Grand Hyatt and a church wedding at St. Anne's in Bandra,⁴⁷ the last two on the Friday and the Saturday,⁴⁸ was a reunion of the comedy ensembles Riteish had spent years in. Akshay Kumar, his co-star in Heyy Babyy and Housefull, came, and so did Shah Rukh Khan.⁴⁹ BollywoodShaadis's account adds John Abraham and Sajid Khan, who directed all three films on this entry⁴⁷⁵⁰.⁵¹ Housefull 2, with Akshay, John and Riteish in the lead, was nine weeks from release.⁵² The reception at the Grand Hyatt on the Saturday night, per PTI, drew the Bachchans, Aamir Khan, Imran Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla and Rekha.⁵³

It was a two-faith wedding, done without fuss: a Maharashtrian ceremony one day, a church the next, and the reception that same night.

10. Anushka, Shah Rukh and Farah at Deepika and Ranveer's reception

We end at a Grand Hyatt reception, with the couple who are the most famous co-stars-turned-spouses of their generation hosting the co-stars who made them.
