Marriage Invitation for Friends: Messages, Card Wording and Ideas
Your friends do not need the formal card. They need to know you really want them there, which functions are theirs, and whether they can bring someone. Here is how to invite them, with messages in English and Hindi.
- Send each friend a personal message, not one post in an old group
- Say which functions a friend is invited to, and whether a partner or children are
- Whoever is named on the invitation is invited
- A line only that friend would understand makes the invitation theirs

There is a moment in every wedding plan when the guest list splits in two. On one side are the relatives, the elders, the family friends of thirty years, who get the formal card: in a Hindu family, the one with the Ganesha at the top1 and "request the pleasure of your company".2 On the other side are your friends: the hostel roommates, the office lunch group, the school friend who has known you since you were nine. Sending them the same formal card feels faintly ridiculous. Sending them nothing but a forward feels careless.
The answer is a second voice: the same invitation, with a message written the way you actually talk to them. This guide covers what that message should say, ready-to-send messages for every kind of friend, card wording for friends in English, Hindi messages, and the questions friends will have, from plus-ones to the sangeet. The examples use a made-up couple, Kavya and Rohan, marrying in Jaipur on Saturday, 13 February 2027.
Quick answer: A marriage invitation for friends should sound like you, name the friend, give the dates and city, say which functions they are invited to, and answer the practical questions before they ask: whether a partner or children are invited, where to stay, and what to wear. Send it to each friend personally rather than in a group, attach or link the invitation, and ask them to reply by a date. Keep the formal card for the family; give friends the same details in your own words.

1. How an invitation for friends is different
A family invitation is about honour: who is inviting whom, in what order, with which blessings. A friend's invitation is about intent: do you really want me there, and what am I actually invited to? Friends will forgive a casual tone. They will not forgive vagueness about the functions, the dates or whether their partner can come.
So the message for a friend leads with warmth, then gets practical quickly. Name them. Say it is happening. Give the dates and the city. Say which functions are theirs. Then link the invitation, where every detail lives.
Plan it: if you send an online wedding invitation, each friend's own link can show only the functions they are invited to, so the message does not have to list them all.
2. Messages for your closest friends
- It is official: Rohan and I are getting married on 13 February 2027 in Jaipur, and there is no version of this wedding without you. Take leave from the 11th. Invitation below.
- You were there for the first date, the first fight and the proposal. Now come for the wedding: 11 to 13 February, Jaipur. Every function is in the invitation below.
- Book your tickets before the fares go up: we are getting married in Jaipur on 13 February. You are on the haldi, the sangeet and the baraat, so plan your outfits accordingly.
- I need you at my wedding, and I need you at my mehendi even more. 12 February, Jaipur. Open the invitation, tick everything, and tell me when you land.
What to remember: with your closest friends, say what you need from them. If you want them to dance at the sangeet or stand beside you at the pheras, ask now, not in the last week.
3. Messages for college, school and office friends
These friends were part of a chapter of your life. The message can be a little more general, but should still be sent to each of them, not dropped once in an old group.
- Hey! Remember the two people who could never agree on where to eat? We are getting married. 13 February 2027, Jaipur. It would be wonderful to see you there; the invitation is below.
- The whole hostel gang has to be there: Kavya and Rohan, 13 February, Jaipur. The sangeet on the 12th is the reunion we never organised. Invitation below.
- Hi! Rohan and I are getting married on 13 February in Jaipur, and we are hosting a reception in Delhi on the 14th. We would love to see you at either. Details in the invitation.
What to remember: if you post the news in an old group, follow it with a personal message to each friend you are inviting. The group is the announcement; the personal message is the invitation.
4. Messages for friends you have not spoken to in a while
Inviting a friend you have drifted from is a small act of courage, and it can land well. Acknowledge the gap lightly, and make it clear the invitation is sincere.
- It has been far too long, and I hope you are well. Rohan and I are getting married on 13 February 2027 in Jaipur, and it would mean a lot to have you there. The invitation is below.
- I know we have not spoken in ages, but you were such a big part of my school years that I could not get married without telling you. 13 February, Jaipur. I would love to see you.
What to remember: give them an easy way to say no. "No pressure at all if you cannot make it" can make it easier for them to say yes.
5. Card wording for friends
If you are printing cards or writing the words of an online invitation for friends, you can drop the formal hosts' line and speak directly.
- Together with their families, Kavya and Rohan invite you to celebrate their wedding. 11 to 13 February 2027, Jaipur.
- We are getting married, and the party is not complete without you. Kavya and Rohan, 13 February 2027, Jaipur.
- Kavya and Rohan are tying the knot, and they would love you there to see it. Sangeet, wedding and a lot of dancing: 12 and 13 February 2027, Jaipur.
- Dhol, dancing and far too much food. Kavya and Rohan are getting married on 13 February 2027 in Jaipur. Come hungry.

What to remember: these lines only open the card. Below them, a friends' card still needs the facts: dates, city, venue, and how to reply.
6. Marriage invitation messages for friends in Hindi
There are more Hindi messages, for family and elders as well, in the guide to wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp.
What to remember: Hindi has three levels of formality for "you": the intimate "तू", the familiar "तुम" and the formal "आप".3 With friends, "तुम" is natural; with an older friend of the family, switch to "आप", and change the verbs with it: "ले लो" becomes "ले लीजिए".4 For a woman friend, "तुम आओगे" becomes "तुम आओगी".5
7. Inviting friends to the sangeet and the friends' nights
The sangeet is a traditional Punjabi and North Indian pre-wedding function of songs and dancing with the couple's close family and friends,6 and WeddingWire India describes the cocktail night as "a night of fun and enjoyment, especially for the young ones".7 If one of your functions is really the friends' night, say so in the message, because it changes what your friends plan: the outfit, the leave, even the flight.
- The sangeet on 12 February is the friends' night, and you are on the dance floor. The theme is in the invitation.
- Family on the 13th, friends on the 11th: the cocktail evening is ours. Come early and stay late.
If friends are performing, ask them early, give them the song list, and tell them how long they have. A friend asked three days before to dance in front of four hundred people is a friend who will remember it.
What to remember: if some friends are invited to every function and others to only one, use personal links or separate messages so nobody feels left out by seeing the full list.
8. Partners, plus-ones and children: saying it clearly
This is the question friends will ask, so answer it in the invitation. If a partner is invited, use both names: "Neha and Sameer, we would love you both there." If you are inviting only your friend, address only them, and if they ask, say kindly that numbers are tight. If children are welcome, say "the kids are invited too"; if not, a simple "we are keeping it to adults" is enough. The Emily Post Institute makes the same point about printed invitations: the names on the inner envelope show exactly who is invited and, by omission, who is not.8
On an online invitation, the reply form can ask how many are coming, so a friend replying for two tells you straight away.
What to remember: names on the invitation are the guest list. Whoever is named is invited.
9. Ideas to make a friend's invitation personal
- Add one line only that friend would understand: the nickname, the inside joke, the place you first met.
- Send a voice note after the invitation, saying it in your own voice.
- Give close friends a role: welcoming the baraat, holding the ring, running the sangeet playlist.
- Call the friends who live far away. A call can make the flight easier to justify.
- Ask a few friends to help, then thank them properly afterwards.
Plan it: keep friends and family in one guest list, with each friend's reply against their name, so you know who is coming to which function.
Frequently asked questions
How do I invite my friends to my wedding?
Send each friend a personal message in your own words with the dates, the city and the functions they are invited to, and attach or link the invitation. Ask them to reply by a date, and call the friends who need to travel.
What should I write in a marriage invitation for friends?
Their name, the news, the dates and city, which functions they are invited to, whether a partner or children are included, and a link to the invitation. A line only they would understand makes it personal.
Is it okay to invite friends on WhatsApp?
Yes. Send it to each friend personally rather than in a group, so the invitation feels like one. For the other side of the conversation, see how to reply to a wedding invitation on WhatsApp.
How do I tell friends that their partner is not invited?
Address the invitation only to your friend, by name. If they ask, say kindly that numbers are limited. Naming exactly who is invited makes the answer clear before anyone has to ask.
Should friends get a different wedding card from family?
They can. You can send family the formal card and friends the same invitation with a more personal message, or a version without the formal hosts' line.
